It’s back-to-school time. Time to get that back-to-school haircut. I’ve also been receiving several questions about my hair-style lately, so thought I would touch on it.
Morning, first day of Menswear Design class at the Fashion Institute of Technology, NYC.
A barber is a stylish man’s best friend. However, as many of you probably know, finding a good barber can be tricky.
The key is communication.
I only go to my man Ceasar, who knows exactly how I like my hair. Ceasar works at Raul’s Barber Shop on Avenue B between Houston and E 2nd. The shop caters primarily to African American men, which means the barbers know their way around a pair of short clippers and a low fade.
Caesar starts with a .5 clipper guard, quickly blends to a 2 on the sides, trims the top with scissors and then shapes-up my back and beard with a straight blade.
$15 + $5 Tip. Once a month – although I usually fade the sides myself once a week with my own clippers.
After that, styling is quick and easy. Dampen, apply evenly a peanut-size amount of Crew Fiber pomade, side part with comb, run hands through from front to back.
Time to get ready: 30-60 seconds.
Thanks for reading.
Yours in style,
SB

I’d love to see a tutorial on how you fade your hair on your own. I hate how quickly my fade grows back in.
If you guys are willing to pay the price, find your local Art of Shaving they give great shaves and they’re pretty knowledgeable on haircuts however its always nice to find your “spot” whether its a boutique barbershop in the city, a traditional barbershop in the burbs, and oddly enough going to the ghetto usually turns up experts on fades.
I hope you don’t mean that going to the “ghetto” means an African American barber shop. African American barber shops are not confined to “the ghetto.”
Why is it that “oddly enough going to the ghetto usually turns up experts on fades” ? Someone successfully cutting and styling hair should not be odd or a surprise, there are skilled people from all backgrounds.
Lets not underestimate and stereotype people.
Nice post. I notice you don’t do much on ‘grooming’. Would love to send you some of our Stellar Shave Cream to try, if you like. Luxurious, healthy (no toxic chems, unlike most shaving products) and very effective. Check it out and let us know. Cheers, Oliver http://www.UrsaMajorMen.com
Yo SB,
Awesome site!
Got a couple questions,
Did you treat you beeswax boots with anything? and did you size down at all for them to fit right?
Nice post, keep them coming!
Does anyone know of a good barbers in or near downtown Montreal? Been looking for a little while now, with limited success…
I got my haircut once there! The guy was pretty good, but I don’t remember where
Cool blog..it gives me inspiration to my style. The idea to cut your hair with back to school sytle…Damn nice. Sorry i’m outta here…got to run to my barberman…
the bag is killer. so is the blog. my first hit on it… keeping up with it from now on bro!
Hey SB, love your posts, but I think I love your Filson rucksack more! That thing kicks some serious ass. I was wondering if you had any recommendations of packs similar to that one and in an “18 year old, part time job, college bills, kind of price tag.” Thanks!
Great haircut. Currently growing mine (on top) to get it to the same style. Handy to have the directions written down.
hey Dan best of luck from Dublin, Ireland in your new fashion course!!
I love the way you don’t fuss about your hair. I hate it when guys have elaborate hair styles.
Clearly your teaching that class on menswear design.
Can any readers in DC recommend a good barber in the city (rather than in Arlington, Bethesda, etc)? I’ve been going to a hairdresser for far too long, and SB’s 100% correct. They just don’t know how to do a good fade.
The Grooming Lounge…that’s about it for a barbers near the city. I know a ton of well qualified barbers just outside in the burb’s that are nice with scissors and clippers.
Additionally, for those on the hunt, there’s the Art of Manliness Barbershop Locator
http://artofmanliness.com/barbershop-locato/
That’s funny, until I found my barber, Don (which is as stereotypical a barber name as I’ve found), I used to make it a point to get my haircut from people that specialized in African American hair for the very same reason: the fade.
Ultimately that’s all your asking for.
Then again now I’ve given up on my balding head of hair that has that front tuft separating away from the back like continental fucking drift and wouldn’t you know it…I still need a barber to shave my head with a 2 clipper because the Great Clips of the world can’t even get that right.
In other parts of the country, the end of the barber looms near. And that’s a damn shame.
Man, I wish I could good a good barber. I have tried several traditional barbers and never found one that I liked the work that was done. Currently I am going to an independent “hair dresser.” I like his work, he’s good at communicating and is not that expensive.
I actually have been doing a part with my hair for a while too. Results don’t look like yours, but it’s a good timeless look.
*find* a good barber.

Good Luck at The Institute SB.

Great post man! Lovin’ it! Keep it up with the back to school stuff!
My long-time barber opened his own place recently. If you want a good, precise cut by a guy who’s paying attention to what he’s doing, try to Geno’s Barberia on Greenwich Ave.
Our currencies don’t measure up however I do the same as you. Fifteen rand + Five rand tip. My Rwandan brothers do a good job. We also differ on the frequency of visits. I go once a week. I am still to embrace my receding hairline and resultant premature balding therefore I stay on top of my game by always meaking sure that I go once a week. Besides my hair and beard grow very quicly for someone with very little in the first place.
Keep up the great work on the blog.
Cranking out these posts. Keep ‘em coming SB. Great job.
Are you going for your master’s or a second degree?
Hey Man,
Good luck with class.
