Today…denim, eh?

Published on October 11th, 2010

Today. The authentic Canadian tuxedo.

Denim on denim takes a little cojones sometimes. Just keep one wash dark, one wash light and the overall mood the latter as well.

Thanks for reading.

Yours in style,

SB

hey dan, very random here but as you may or may not now, i constantly go back and look at old posts for re-inspiration. anyway, do you recall if this shirt is rrl’s medium wash or light wash? btw, can’t wait to see f/w collection.

The strap looks like a ‘James Bond’ NATO – worn by Sean Connery on a Rolex Submariner in the films Goldfinger and Thunderball. It looks good on the Mont Blanc, but even better on a divers watch.UKWatchStrap.co.uk

I got my WeirdGuys at Holt Renfrew (sort of a Canadian Saks) for $125 CAD, compared to $240-$280 for APC and Simon Miller (which were my 2nd choice for fit). If you like the fit of New Standards and can get them for $150, that seems pretty good. I’ve only ever seem them for $200+ in Toronto.

  • BLEUDENIM

You need a denim jacket to really make that a Canadian Tuxedo.

Hey SB, I was looking at the APC website at their new standards jeans. They only had 2 colors: indigo and black. But your NS’s featured here and a few posts back (with the white shirt) look really dark. Darker than the one shown on their site.

Are your NS’s a different color, perhaps not offered on the website? Or is the picture on their website just not a good representation of the color?

    Thanks

    Bryan

I recently tried on a bunch of raw denim options – APC New Standards, Simon Miller, Naked and Famous – and I went with the Naked and Famous WeirdGuy. A bit slimmer at the ankle without being too tight, and half the price of New Standards (in Canada, anyway). Made in Canada with Japanese selvedge denim – a great contemporary fit at a good price. Recommended!

    • TO

mj~ Where’d you get those? Hoping to travel to MTL at some point and def gonna check em out. I thought only the ‘unbranded’ jeans N&F made for Urban Outfitters were half the price of standards… maybe this store marked them up, new standards are usually $150..?

Ok- that’s what I suspected. I actually picked up a pair of new standards at a Barney’s in Chicago about a year ago for $150- I’m pretty sure that’s the usual price stateside. I like the narrower leg opening on the N&F like you mentioned, also their reps keep telling me you don’t need to size down to accommodate for stretch. What have you found with that?

          • mj

I am normally a 31 waist and this is what I got for the WeirdGuys – after a month or so and 4-6 full days of wear they remain a good fit. I was not prompted to size down by the sales person at Holt’s (who seemed knowledgeable enough). I’m 6’3″ and the length off the rack allows for a 1-inch cuff roll (to show the selvedge edge) and decent stacking.

    SB:

Nice look, fit is impeccable as usual.

It’s getting cold in DC, and I have been looking around for a pair of rugged boots, a trend this season as I’m sure you are aware. Living in DC, like NYC, one has to do a fair amt. of walking and I am looking for something stylish with good traction…how about a post with some pointers on boots? I’d like to get your opinion on some styles you endorse at different price points…

Also, the boat shoes are legit, I’ve continued wearing mine; when do we have to retire them for the season?

    Thanks, and stay FRESH…

SB Can you give us some insight on your design collection. When is it coming out? Who is going to be carrying your line? Is it all made in Italy?

    Thanks

    Dan-
Good to see you break out of your usual MAB uniform! That stuff looks great, but there’s a whole world out there!

    keep it stylish mate,

SB – lookin’ sharp in the “Canadian Tuxedo” (denim on denim)! I see there are a couple of questions regarding APC jeans. The general rule for APC jeans is to go two sizes down. They feel snug at first cause their raw denim, but they’ll break in just nicely. Hope this helps your readers and keep up the great work!

Is that a grilled cheese in your right back pocket Dan?

  • Anonymous

I saw you today in the street!! You were wearing the SICKEST leather jacket…i was like who is that guy?? Too shy to say anything though :p Keep being flyyy

  • TO

I can see you’ve lost your tux jacket in this picture ;)

  • Travis

Any recommendations on any other denim shirts in a light wash like this one? Looks great like you have it with dark denim pants.

  • Marlo

I love double denim… or in general a monotone outfit…

sometimes hard to pull off, but if done right, super dope…

quick question… did you get your shirt altered/taken in…

i like the slim look of it..

  • Anonymous

Yuck. I disapprove of double denim.

  • Anonymous

I have an awfully hard time pulling off the denim/denim look. Just looks off on me

  • MeL

Denim on denim is always tricky , its so easy to get it wrong n bt , I always wondered what colour of jeans will go great with denim shirts, but you superbly pull it off.

    Mel from Cape Town

  • SB

Hi SB I’m from Cape Town SA just discovered your site ,I like the denim with denim but the darker jeans are imperative to pull it off.

This is my first time reading your blog and I thoroughly enjoy it. I’ve notice that where most fashion writers write from a more intuitive aspect you do a good job of explaining the technically aspects or the “science” of fashion. Me being an engineering major I can really appreciate that, keep up the good work.

  • JMRouse

Nice! I’m still looking for the perfect denim shirt for myself, but got to say that looks great.

Hey Dan, how often do you get recognized on the street these days?

    • JMRouse is back. Thought we lost you for a minute there. As far as getting recognized, it doesn’t happen terribly often…maybe once a week, or less. Hope all is well brother!

      • JMRouse

Yeah, had a busy week couple weeks. Everything doing great. Heard you all are going to be in for a cold winter. Going to be interesting to see what you put together.

I’m telling you man, you have changed my way of thinking about clothes. Not that I try and dress like you or anything, but I’m putting a lot more thought into what I wear and the little touches that make it all stand out.

  • Thatguy

off topic, but you should do a segment on dress shoes, what are your favorite makers? Im about your age and just recently got into the shoes game myself( recently graduated from the school of AIR JORDAN, LOL)

iv bought a pair of John Lobb’s, Bontoni, two crockett and Jones and a pair of Gaziano and Girling

I already had a few other shoes that got me through the latter part of high school and college like my Aldens and the Gucci loafers.

  • Ryan O.

Great post. How long have you been wearing your A.P.C’s (a year or two?). How many times a month do you wear them?

    • I’ve had this pair for about a year, but this is the first time I’ve worn them since last fall – because they are so heavy. I rarely wear raw denim in the spring or summer. Fall/winter these probably get used every two weeks or so. Hard to say though, sometimes I’ll fall in love again and wear them for 3 days straight. Sporadic, really.

  • Nader

Gosh, can’t find APCs here at Brazil.

    • If you have the internet, you should be able to buy just about anything. Remember to buy one size down!

      • Nader

Thanks for answering Dan, you’re a genius!

Really wanted a pair of these but I’m afraid about the fit, I heard that APC sizes are a little different.

Also, I only wanted these pants because of the ‘hype’ about the fit.
Dan, do you recommend another brand ?

  • wahoo

love canadians and double denim but that half tuck is wack. i like the “thrown together” look as much as the next person but when you’re half in and half out it looks a little weird and contrived, no? at least you have it handy for cleaning the glasses though. stay cool stay fresh.

  • Henners

Just discovered this site and have been looking through you’re previous posts.
You have a very European style going on with the fit of your clothes etc. and wouldn’t look out of place in any major city around the world.
I tend to dress similar, though sometimes on a smaller budget, and comments are usually good, though around here most people have a small town attitude and don’t always “get it”.
Anyways, congratulations on a great site and great effortless style.

An admirer from across the pond!!!

    • Don’t get caught up in “small town attitudes”. Be yourself! Don’t let others define you. At first there may be some “push-back”, but eventually people will know you for you. In my case, when I was first getting into men’s style, it took a little time to go from “what the hell is he wearing?” to “i wonder what is he wearing today!”. Thanks for reading.

  • Donny

Hey Dan, i’m wearing a similar outfit right now, however I think I’ve said this before in another post how I dislike the shoes your wearing, but everything else looks good. BTW weren’t you suppose to have won an IWC from esquire and what do you think about John Varvatos Converses future classics or not?

    • Thanks for sharing. Yes, I did receive an IWC. I’m not a fan if JX x converse – I’m all for “classics with a twist”, but in this case it was a little too literal. Best, Dan

  • JC- The French

“Today…denim, eh ?” Yes, de Nîmes in France !

  • Victor

    NICE!!

I was just wondering about an outfit with all denim! Appreciate the post SB! Your APC’s are looking great.

Quick question, do you respond to emails on what to wear with certain items? If not, no worries, didn’t want to waste your time.

    • Hey Victor. I try my best to! And Jenilee has been helping. Sometimes I can take a while to respond, especially as the popularity of the site grows and my free time shrinks :/ I’ll try my best. Thanks for reading! -SB

  • Maverick

So cool and handsome Dan. Fabulously awesome and well done. Love the shirt half tucked in.

  • Anonymous

Dan – How did your APC’s break in? I tried on a pair of 29s the other day. The waist was tight but I could button it without too much effort. The thighs were pretty tight and walking felt restricted, but the salesman assured me this was a good thing and they’d break in perfect. I’m a bit hesitant. Any thoughts?

    • Don’t be hesitant. Believe me, they will stretch! When I first bought my most recent pair of APC denim, I could hardly walk in them – now they are slightly too big in places, but I’m really happy with them. -SB

  • spiffydave

i agree with the rules of double denim, and i love the outfit. but i’ll be honest, those three-eyed boat shoes are pretty frumpy looking. they’re too unstructured and rounded. lose those for sure.

    spiffydave.wordpress.com

    • I haven’t worn these much, I actually think they are broken-in just right. They don’t do well dressed-up, however – they are black, but the soft leather reads more casual (and more comfortable at the same time). Thanks for reading and for sharing your opinions. Best, Dan
