2. Simple Casual + Fatigue Jacket
A vintage fatigue jacket, in camo or solid olive cotton, is a great layering piece.
I picked up this vintage one for $30 and I’ve worn it with everything from a v-neck and jeans (as shown here), to a waistcoat and and tie, to a t-shirt and sneakers, and layered it several other ways.
Bonus Tip: pairing strong orange with camo is a cool subtle nod to hunting camouflage rather than fighting camouflage – a mix that goes back a long way and therefore is not unnatural to the eye.
Bonus Tip: extent your shirt cycle through the Fall/Winter by wearing your short sleeve shirts under knits – they also bunch less and fit more easily under sweaters

In one of the other comments you mentioned that you tapered the pants yourself. I found some pants at a thrift store today, and as far as I can tell they should be about the exact same as the ones you are wearing. They are, however, a bit baggy. Any advice on tapering pants oneself, or links to good tutorials? Or, advice on what to tell a tailor to ensure that you get what you want? I live in the midwest, in an area that isn’t very fashion forward, so I fear that a tailor may be confused about why I am asking them to take in a pair of beat up thrifted army pants. Thanks a lot, I love the blog!
No (well, maybe), no, and no .
In civilian life, camo pants are best suited with Chucks or some other smooth sneaker and a t-shirt. Dressing it up looks ridiculous.
Though I must say, the below comment is entirely personal, and the thing that’s possibly best about his style, is that he keep it lively and unique. Being confident enough to stand out and stray from fashion “norms” is what makes him most impressive.
As much as I love this guy, I have to say, camo is not meant for casual/civilian wear.
By far my favorite post on here. Every look is great in its own way.

Hi I’ve been looking for camo pants just like those. Where can I find them?
You can find those exact camo pants by going to any military surplus or online by searching “woodland bdus.” Hope that helps Josh.
Going along with your tip on having new jeans hug your legs, do you recommend the same for chinos? I got some Docker khakis to add to my pant collection as I’ve only worn jeans until I came across your site. I got them one size up because they were more comfortable to walk around in, but I probably could’ve managed the first size I tried on (32/30).
Will chinos do the same and go to a slim state? Thanks!
Dan
Cameo isn’t working, salute to the military but your
style is way beyond looking like a private first class
soldier.
hah, thanks for reading.
Love the looks, incorporating camouflage into a fit is definitely bold while actually trying to dress the pattern “up”. I tried to do the same years back on my little fashion blog over at chictopia, my joints are ok.. lol.. but your looks are definitely inspiring even more.

A great work, as always!
However, for the look number 1, I just think the look would’ve been better if you wear your black Sebago Lighthouse boot with it.
Just my opinion, though.
Regards.
Thanks for sharing your opinion Z. -SB
camo, and I think they will stand out. I have every US Military service nbrach Wrestling News for 10/28/11Daily DDTJohn Cena ditches his jorts in favor of ‘military-issued camo’Cageside Seats
The first look is intriguing because of the way it combines pieces from the navy and the army.
Great point! I should have thought of that. -SB
First thing first? I cannot define what’s really your style!
Is it preppy, Ivy, Italian, I really don’t know.
Of all the shots I’ve seen that first look is TERRIBLE!
Camouflage pants with shoes, for the love of fashion please stay away from camouflage style and keep it basic my brother.
I’m not sure what “for the love of fashion” means, but thanks for sharing. I could “keep it basic” but that isn’t me, nor would it make for much of a style website. Thanks for reading. -SB
Style- quality of imagination and individuality expressed in one’s actions and tastes…I think the camo is awesome man, looks great especially with the orange shirt. Not many people would think to pair those but then I saw the socks and was sold. Keep up the great posts.
Been following your blog, but this is my first comment. I’m loving all of the looks especially the one with the army jacket.
Thanks for reading Charles -Dan
I like the second look quite a bit, and I had worn a look similar to that but with an even older style camo top, a 60s dated ERDL top(basically the older version of the camo you are wearing) and was told by a retired soldier that he thought it was disrespectful.
It didnt have any patches or medals on it and I never claimed to be anyone I wasn’t.
Im just curious as to how you or any of your other readers feel about that issue.
Love the Blog, keep up the good work.
Thanks for reading J.
That’s interesting. I understand where he is coming from; it is a uniform that takes honor and courage to wear. I, of course meant no disrespect by wearing it.
I think unless it has a solider’s name on it (or badges or medals, as you said) it’s fair game.
SB
That cotton olive jacket is siiick!!!
Thx for reading.
need one of these darker scarves today!

excellent job as always trep.
That would have been a nice piece to feature here.
Thanks Stu!
Hey Dan one of gq “fashion guys” just did a post on wearing camo on the same day as you. It’s a joke. You are single handedly killing these guys. Have they contacted you to work for or with them yet? Congrats on sites success

Hah, nobody’s competing. I have been a big fan of GQ’s work for years and would be excited to collaborate with them in some way. Thanks for reading.
Hey Dan! Featured you here: http://barrycyrus.wordpress.com/2011/01/05/of-fashionistas-playing-basketball-2/#more-4639! :)
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Thanks Barry! Happy New Year to you as well.
i’m not very fan to the military vest lol
Not sure which vest you’re referring to, but thanks for reading.
wow! This is the time to get my camouflage pants old from my college days and wear it again. :)

Thanks for reading Rich.

You people just can’t appreciate a different look now can you? The Camo pants are awesome with those shoes because they are fitted. Although I in my opinion, I would make them just a bit more slimmer and crop them an inch or so. Also, I know they look authentic because they are authentic, but if they had a more refined fabric they would look excellent with the rest of the outfit. Great inspiration.
Hey Amir, thanks for reading. True, there are some cool camo pants with a tailored trouser cut….but that would be too easy :)
The safest (and coolest) way to do it is to get some camo fabric and have some clothes made bespoke, like Mr. Wooster here:
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_0FjPCtl8nPY/TCJoZb-_XlI/AAAAAAAAIYQ/0e3hFq_rxQ4/s1600/untitled.bmp
That’s an expensive trendy piece, however.

the first and third looks are great! unexpected and original.
Just out the looks here. I like all of the ideas that have been presented and some elements more than other. I live the Orange Sweater look and Olive Coat look very much. I think the Olive coat look would be great for those guys that don’t know what to wear as a casual night out to the bar or a 1st date look too.
Good work Dan.
- Sabir
So Sabir, I see your a big fan of Dan’s work too…but it looks like your website that you always paste on here is just a second rate copy of dan’s…right down to the black white and orange banner! Com’on man, there can only be one real sb. He’s all about being Original!
Keep up the great work Dan, you have a number of wannabes lol
-loyal reader
I figured I should respond to this one. I do enjoy Dan’s work. Ive been reading since the 1st Styleblogger site. When I created my site I used a variety of templates my current one that works the best and is the easiest to navigate. Dan is a big influence on my work and so are alot of the other bloggers that I follow. Our work is all different but with the same goal of showing off personal style. Be sure that things will change with my site with time. Of course i can take the criticism like a man so no hard feelings here. It would be different if I was the bashing type, i just give props really where they are due.
- Sabir
Sup Sabir,
Keep doing the damn thing. As a result I peeped your site and have you bookmarked. I like your style dude. Do you.
Playas wanna play
Ballers wanna ball
Rollers wanna roll
But I’m taking off after I dance, yeah”
Thanks Man. Of course man. Got to keep rolling and staying fresh.
@ Sabir,
I enjoy your site. As a matter of fact, I checked you out after a feature on your Esquire thread on Dappered, which actually led me to this site. Like you, I follow quite a few style blogs, trying to take some aspects of them all as I continue to define and add to my own personal style. Its nice to see dan’s take on style with a seemingly unlimited budget, and then be able to see more affordable pieces that sites like yours and Dappered identifies.
Basically I’m saying we need Dan’s site AND sites like yours. Keep doing your thing man and EFF these HATERS!!! Its a sickness..
Sabir,
We all know that Dan is the man, but we also need to shout out to guys like you who are keepin’ it locked for guys who care about style. I checked out your site also, and you’re lookin’ fresh so keep it up!
We all work hard at what we do. Style is style and we all our take on it. Sh*t, when Dan drops his line I will be sure to cop something because style supports each other.
Don’t let people get to you Sabir.
If I yielded every time somebody “hated” on me, I would still be shoveling sh*t back on the farm in Canada.
Use it as motivation. I love when people tell me I can’t do something, it DRIVES me to get it done, especially if it’s “never been done before”.
Glad I could be an inspiration.
“Keep doing you, and I’ma do me”. Best, SB
Not the biggest fan, but I like it because its different. Casual trousers call for casual shoes. Love the site man.

I actually like the first look a lot. Very original.
Thanks Zach -SB
No one does Camouflage like Wooster.
Couldn’t agree more. -SB
The second look is spot on, third look is great. It looks kind of unsettling wearing a dress shoe and a seemingly “loose fit” pants for the first look. But either ways, personal taste is subjective and hard to argue. Love your work. Inspires me to dress up for work.

Thanks for reading Amirul. It’s kinda funny what people consider “loose” pants these days, considering the baggy jeans guys were wearing about 10 years ago. I tapered these pants myself, probably took them in about 3 inches. Nonetheless, thanks for sharing. All the best, SB
Simply clean!!
I definitely am on the same page with you. The pants have been on my list for about 7 months now lol.. Instead i just bought me some marc by marc jacob plain army green pants.
Anyways keep it up!!
Please check out my fashion photography / menswear blog!!

THE FIRST LOOK IS SOOO SICKKK!! It’s crazy how you are always subtly on some avant-garde/trend-setting/next level/kanye west shit! Why does he do it? Because he can!!!
-Huge Fan
I have to agree with the previous post. I really dislike the first look which is surprising because most of the things you wear I believe work well. I have only read the winter portion of your blogging, so I will have to see what the summer style is all about. Layering seems to be a strong suit, however; the pattern mixing is for the birds.
love the third look…the 1st look unfortunately (even for you-and i dont say this lightly) doesnt work..
Sir,
Thanks for writing this blog. I enjoy it very much.
For their squares, may I suggest your readers consider “recycling” real camo trouser thighs or blouse backs. For those who want to pay homage to a particular branch of service – or even just “pop” a specific color pallet – there are seven distinct patterns of camo across today’s U.S. forces alone (your tax dollars at work).
Anyone who’d rather have someone else sew for them may wish to consider an internet search for any of the hundreds of military wives and moms who use old uniforms to make purses. I’m sure they’d be glad to help.
Respectfully Submitted, T. Zagraniski
I love your use of camo in this post. Most guys think that camo means an old dusty tee shirt and shoes that really shouldn’t be worn in public. LOL!!! My favorite is the camo with the orange sweater although the unexpectedness of it as a hanky is pretty cool too!!

Again I have to give it to you for the first outfit, and even though the critics are a little harsh, you still are very avant-garde with a touch of style!
Like you wrote before, there isn’t any wrong or right way to dress, it’s really based on your own preferences!
The camo, orange v-neck, and the socks, awesome combo.
Also, the last outfit is very “crispy”, but in my case I’m very particular with the way my denims fit, and they have to be comfortable when I put them on… but you pulled it off with the camo pocket square.
The suede chukka boots from John Varvatos are really nice, I saw one of your posts before where you had some navy blue ones on, sick!
Keep the fresh vibe for 2011!
Thanks for reading, and commenting.
Camo pocket square is sharp! Can’t get behind the dressy shoes with the pants, though. I know you’ve been trying hard to get it moving, but it does not work.
Love the blog – keep it up!
No worries…seems like people are either loving or hating it. Thanks for reading, SB
Awesome Bro!
Some amazing stuff here SB! That R&B jacket is superb- I think the ‘fresh cut’ also adds to the military vibe in the first look. I think it would create a great contrast look if you paired down a rugged boot with that one too. The raw denim insight was on point as well.
Good point about the haircut. Thank, as always, TO
Dan, I’m very happy to see you’ve featured Jcrew’s jeans. I’m a big fan, though sometimes struggle with sizing. Are those the 484′s featured in Look #3? Any words of wisdom for a guy deciding between those and the vintage slim fit? Thanks for your help, and keep up the good work!
They are the 484′s actually. They fit me better than the vintage slim’s. Body types vary greatly and jeans are so idiosyncratic – try them on and buy the ones that fit best. Thanks for reading! SB
I was just talking about this! Amazing! Great job!
Thanks Adrian
That Blazer is looking pretty wide there on the shoulders.
point to point is 18 1/8″
Third look is brilliant, second look is pretty decent, but I just can’t get behind the first look. The camo looks completely out of place, and not in a good way. It stands out in the way Uggs stand out.
Hah. No worries, thanks for reading.
Like the bottom two photos and kit. Great blog – I look forward to it. Good luck.
can’t say i like the first look but the others are great
3rd look is excellent, everything blends together.
Love the 2nd look also, very casual.
Great post Dan!..I feel that you have really pulled all three looks with two trends that ended 2010 but will(HOPEFULLY)stay throughout this year as well:Military and Orange which appropriately compliments Camo.
Also, I love your level of risk taking. It’s incredibly influential. Much love and respect Bro.

In terms of denim… What should the larger (i.e. fatter) man do/ wear?? Loving the blog across the pond!
Post on “dressing for your body type” coming soon! Per your question, I would say dark, straight leg, not too slim, and a full break. Thanks for reading. -SB
Love the third look.
