1. Layer a Holiday Sweater
There’s only one rule to dressing for a holiday party: Go for it!
If you’ve been thinking about breaking out that funky fair isle sweater, that bold dinner jacket, or those lush velvet slippers, now is your chance.
Holiday party crowds are easy-going and typically appreciate a festive outfit, even if it’s slightly over-the-top. Call it getting into the spirit.
A fair isle sweater is perfect for the occasion, especially one with knitted snowflakes and christmas colors. Layer it with a wool tie and textured jacket and you’re good to go.
Holiday parties are also the perfect occasion to break out those “statement slippers” that you’ve been dying to wear.

Great timely post – Something about the tartan suit on Townsend makes him look like a linebacker, maybe the large plaid print? Interesting look.
The reason it makes him look so big is because it’s way too big for him. Look at the folds around the upper arms and shoulders.
I like the tassel & forest green slippers. They kind of have that casual-formal look
I never comment, but I felt unusually obliged tonight – your boy Townsend has his heart in the right place…Lord knows he does…but he’s SWAGLESS, and it shows. Westley is extra weak with it too. I mean seriously, when it comes to swag, those guys are straight naked out here – like, ass out.
Besides those two setbacks, you’re doing the damn thing out here cuz.

Yes Ben, swag – without it, you’re simply a douche in expensive clothing. The man makes the clothes, not the other way around.
He was commenting on your over emphasis on “swag.” I would say putting all your energy into achieving “swag” is douchey. You are contradicting yourself. Townsend and Westley look great because they have their own aesthetic and wear their clothes with confidence.

What a great post.It really makes me wish I was still in NY, because the weather for the Holidays in Buenos Aires (where I moved for good last year)is extremely hot, as hot as “middle-of-the-summer-100-degrees” hot. I wish I was in old NY! But reading your posts I feel I am somehow still part of the city.
I’ve been reading this blog almost from day one, and I really believe Dan and his team are growing and getting much more confident in many ways, giving the readers ( may I say followers?) a priceless advice to face the world in style, whatever the occasion might be.

Hmm. On a very dark navy I would probably go with darker buttons so that they are not jarring. With that said, they can still be tortoise.
The suit Wes is wearing is a light navy, almost royal, and the light tortoise buttons still pop a lot.

There are a million and one “rules” to black tie, including tail coats in the morning and keeping the waistline covered…
If there is ever time to look sharp while breaking the “rules”, it’s a black tie party.

Wish you’d posted this last week, which was when the Holiday party was for me. Nice work and keep it “real”. This has become my go-to site for (mostly) accessible men’s fashion because of that.

My only gripe is most of these looks only work in a setting with other like minded fashion heads.
I disagree. While a couple of the looks are intentionally pushing the limits of “classic menswear”, the Holidays are a time when outfits can be a little more fun and forward.
I grew up on a small farm in the middle of nowhere, and a few of these looks (mainly the tweed/fair isle combos) would work even back home…

I see what frost said as a problem. Dress for YOU, not the crowd. Be confident in wearing something “different”. Set the bar, don’t just try to hold yourself to it. As a wise man once said, “be better than the gap”!!

I’ve been following your blog for about two years now, and what I’ve noticed is that your looks have become more and more…theatrical. No sane male (fine: very few sane males) would wear your outfits in public–especially in America anywhere outside of Manhattan. It’s like you’ve become a caricature.
And that beard is just so bad on so many levels.

I have to completely agree. If I showed up wearing any of this to a Christmas party this year, my family and others would laugh me out of the room.I agree with the comment that it’s all all about the context of the situation.
I totally appreciate the effort’s Dan has made on the site and have drawn inspiration for a few looks myself.
I think one element that keeps on getting missed, that Dan and others have mentioned – is that style is a very PERSONAL thing and it takes TIME and EFFORT to developing your own style(and) this site is not about JUST coping styles.

Awesome post and the, I’m not sure what to call it, clasp? On the flannel suit in #8 is great! I’m assuming there’s a button to make that actually fuctional?
The tab collar on the tweed jacket is a sporty touch, commonly seen on hunting jackets.
It can be fastened to a button under the collar on the other side of the jacket (with the lapels popped) allowing the jacket to be fully closed for warmth and protection.

All thongs (flip-flops) and board shorts down under at this time of year. Well…actually at every time of year. Aus = the country where fashion and style is completely absent. I know, I’m from there.

Hmm. I guess it depends what kind of boss you are.
If you’re a hard-ass authority figure, maybe keep it more conservative and straight edge. But if you’re an easy going boss at a creative start-up, by all means loosen up and have fun with it.

That is exactly how I use this site, Dan. I tend towards a more “classic” style, so some of the looks just will not work for me. However, I use the ideas I get from this site to mix things up as “classic” can get boring real fast.
For e.g. love the purple velvet blazer look. But I would wear it with solid colored pants, not checked.
First time I rocked an Ascot was when I was 18 at an x’mas party. I guess it is time to do it again!

Some good looks but have to say I’m not a fan of slippers. The short pants…still can’t get used to it; looks like they’ve shrunken in the wash. The vest with a turtle neck jumper and tucked-in sweaters – acquired taste I suppose.
