Magnetic tie tacks do exist — Google it. You’ll find several on Etsy at any given time.
Use caution pairing them with ties made of silk or other delicate fabrics, though, as the super-strong magnets can leave a permanent impression.
You could even adapt a pin-based tie tack yourself with wire cutters, superglue, and a strong magnet and a smooth metal backing (or another magnet). I’ve also seen genius metal collar stays that come with a magnet that goes inside your shirt for button-down functionality without the buttons.
I don’t mean to bait a political conversation here, but I do wish the example had been something other than a gun, lest this post be seen as a statement against gun law reform that is such a current topic of conversation right now in the US.

Hmm. I’m not sure. That’s clever, although I’d be worried about losing it.
Does it matter on the type of pin or is there a pin that is specifically a tie pin. For example can a pin that is used on the lapel, can that be used as a tie pin?
Does any pin qualify as a tie pin? or is there special thinner needle pins design for ties specifically? This one looks awesome!
Funny, I was just thinking about tie pins a few days ago, in a what-ever-happened-to kind of way. While I agree that it is definitely off-putting when a sartorial detail like the tie bar starts showing up in mass culture, I can’t get behind the idea that that makes it “played out.” For me, the tie bar is a timeless and classic menswear accessory that will never go out of style. True, it may be a bit ubiquitous right now but I’ll wager that it will run its course in the realm of bro couture rather quickly. In the meantime, rather than damning the tie bar itself, why not be confident that knowing when to wear it, and more importantly, how to wear it and pair it trumps any level of mass culture co-opting?
I did not mean to stop wearing tie bars. I’m wearing one now.
They’ve gotten to the point, though, that some guys won’t leave the house without one.

Tie pins ruin ties. Stick to what you want to wear but with personality. If you chose a tie bar then do it with some detail instead of a plain silver tie bar, like what you see on ESPN.

I’ve been wearing tie pins for years and nobody has ever noticed the tiny needle hole in any of my ties, on the site or in real life… Don’t be scared.
Start wearing your tie bar, wear them before they are trendy and wear them after they cease to be trendy. Be yourself, wearing tie bars because others do is meretricious.

Yeah, it does. Depending on the material and pattern, pins can be really ill-advised–especially on fabrics like cotton or madder. I’m sticking with bars, trendiness be damned.
A tie pin does make a tiny pin hole in your tie. Most of my ties have these holes. Nobody notices.
Typically it’s attached to the shirt with a small chain button-hole anchor.

So I guess if one did have a noticeable hole in a tie, it could be covered with a pin, or a tie bar, or a waistcoat or cardigan.
Yup.
I would try sticking the pin through the backside of the tie, to see how the fabric reacts to the puncture wound. Some fabrics will have better bounce-back than others.
I’ve always wondered, is it damageable for the tie to pin it this way?
I’ve had some people recommend against tie pinds due to potential damage to the ties. Do you guys ever have problems with that, or do you think it is a negligible concern? Personally I love a good tie clip and have not yet been tempted to delve into the world of tie pins, but that revolver pin does look pretty damn sexy if I may say so.
No, yes.
The pinhole is more obvious on certain fabrics. The only one I would completely avoid would be silk in a solid color.

I’ve always thought tie bar were played because the only people I’ve seen wear them are old people. I just feel a lot of accessories can age an outfit. Sometimes old don’t = gentlemen nevertheless its always nice to remix an old favorite.
