Let’s Get Faded – Spring Chinos

April 24th, 2013

Spring is here – time to break out the colorful chinos.

Try to avoid the predictable (like loud red) and anything bright neon. Look for faded pastel shades of unexpected colors.

Here’s three examples to get the ideas flowing.

1. Mellow Yellow

I like to keep it simple in the Spring, and use color to make an outfit fresh.

A great combination for this time of year: cobalt blue, cognac brown, and yellow. But not bright school bus yellow. A dustier, faded yellow.

I’m a huge fan of the denim jacket, but I love to switch things up. This lightweight vintage zip-up is a great replacement for the Spring/Summer.

I’m also a big fan of band-collar shirts, especially in warmer weather. Dan cut the collar off this old Banana Republic shirt and replaced it with a white neckband. Then I stole it from the TSB styling closet.

And I can’t go a post without saying it. Time and time again, visit your local vintage stores… I picked up these brown loafers (which I desperately needed in my rotation), shined them up a little bit and now they’ve become a go-to.

the mint chino outfit is well done. i’d wear that. love the striped ocbd and polka dotted tie. and everything looks very updated.

the yellow chino and the mauve chino outfits…the pants themselves are nice. the jackets though…i mean it’s obvious you guys bought them at a thrift store haha. kind of comical.

that’s the point, you know… if u read it.

  • fash1on

the 90′s called. they want their goatee back.

  • Barbara

Long hair on you looked much better and more unique!!
    Otherwise, everyone’s outfit looked handsome.

  • ian

dan looks great here he toes the line between foppish and dandy quite well, I have the same cardi as towni and wear it all the time also do those bucks have a crepe sole because is so that is some ridiculous next level shit

  • http://urbsuburbstyle.com/blog/ Paul

The yellow and mauve are my favorites. The yellow’s a great dusty color, as opposed to neon – and the mauve is just perfect.

  • Tyler

    Hey Dan,

I know you did a piece on all of the hair regimens but I noticed that the part in your hair seemed to be more district than usual. Did you have your barber put a line where the part is? I have considered doing the same but I am unsure if that is a good idea or not.

    Thanks

Great Spring Post! Bostonians love their colored chinos as well especially red & yellow. It always great to see Matsuda shades in post the quality is remarkably. As city dwellers its great to also have a cobbler nail heel savers to the front and back of your shoes it increases the lifetime of the soles. #Tsbmen #TheMovement

Keeping it minty fresh Towni- I like the first pic the way the tie bows just so.

Wes- I looove that vintage zip-up man. Personally one of my favorite vintage finds is always a unique and/or basic windbreaker. Great pairing with the banker band collar and great chino color choice too!

Btw, I am pretty sure Michael Williams is sporting that same tried and trusted Banana Republic brown belt of Dan’s in the cover photo of the ten essentials he just did with GQ- or at least one very similar!

  • Michael

All outfits are great guys!!! But Dan’s trousers has AWESOME colour!!!

  • RIchard

    Love Towni’s fit.

I have a pair of mint 7FAM chino’s myself but since they’re the same color as hospital scrubs I get asked if I’m in nursing whenever I wear them.

  • Shawn

Dan, your whole outfit looks amazing! (it helps that I have a thing for bengal stripes shirts!)

  • Kiel

Colorful pants are fun in theory, but I can’t see this trend lasting. Too silly.

    • TO

Meh I wouldn’t really say it is a trend. It has been going on since the 60′s and the ‘trend’ is actually less bold versions of bright colors, so as to say “less silly” I suppose! :)

  • Andrew L

Wes or Dan, how do you cut shirts to make them band collar shirts? I am a fan of them, but would love to try and tailor some of my shirts

  • http://stylishbefore40.blogspot.com stylishbefore40

Dan , I love your penny.I repeat PENNY.My english is not perfect , I think about loafers.

  • Brent Kuz

Mint pants are too “scrubs” for me. No pinks or baby blues? I know you made a comment against Nantucket reds but I feel in Rhode Island they are used very well.

    • http://tsbmen.com Townsend

We’re big fans of Nantucket reds over here… Was referring to the bright red pants you see cropping up that just scream for attention. Thanks for reading!

      • Mr E

I’m going to stand up for the bright crimson chinos you see around today.

I don’t know how or when wearing red trousers became “predictable” but I find them quite fun to wear if you’re adventurous enough to give them a go.

        There. I said it.

  • Poofy

Lol at you simpletons thinking The Beard is gone for good.

The Beard never resigns, The Beard simply takes a vacation.

  • Ali Naaseh

Townie’s mop of hair is the new Dan’s Beard

  • Marshall Mulherin

Looooove that blazer Dan. Just curious, what is the little button hole added onto the lapel for? I’ve seen that before, but I have no idea what the practical purpose is.

    • RedYeti

Traditionally they were so you could pop the lapels and button them up across your neck to keep the wind or rain out. Nowadays they’re more of a stylistic choice than anything

      • http://tsbmen.com Dan Trepanier

That’s exactly right. A nice move for the cold of winter.

      • Marcus Forlan

They should bring this practical feature back.

  • cam

great stuff. gq did a feature on vampire weekend last month with the same idea that others should check out for more inspiration. keep it up

  • http://wacavenue.blogspot.com Theguybehindthelens

Dan please tell me that alpaca blazer is hitting the TSB shop soon. It is the most dope vintage piece I have seen you wear in a while. Also on an unrelated note you have also been bringing some seriously good looks for WWIT.

  • http://undefined TimL

He Dan, nice to see you back all fresh an young looking again!

Love the jacket in #3. It looks longer than you usually wear Dan and I like it.

I have severaly longer sports coarts for casual wear.
    Thanks again!

  • John

A post with amazing looks, a great title and a reference to Darkwing Duck? I’m sold!

I’ve been looking for a lighter bomber jacket for spring, Wes gave me some ideas!

On a side note, is there a rule againist cuffing (not rolling) lighter, spring/summer-friendly pants?

    • M.

I would also like to know, although
it’s simple logic that when it’s warmer, you go light.
      Meaning no extra fabric.

  • Kid Icarus

    Let’s get dangerous!

    • http://tsbmen.com Dan Trepanier

      Hell yea!

  • Tony T

I remember googling “colored chinos” back in 2011 and finding this page. Ever since then, I’ve been a huge fan. Keep up the good work.

  • Cory

    That jacket is amazing…

  • Tee

“Spearmint” chinos = formal scrub bottoms.

  • http://Dapperadvisor.tumblr.com Akil

I completely agree that pastels are the go to trousers for the spring. I like pairing them with a crisp white shirt and a denim jacket especially for those cooler spring nights. Much respect to the TSBmen team for this installment.

  • Matt

Love the post! On the belt that Wes is wearing did y’all add the metal d ring or did it come on the belt when it was purchased?

    • http://www.tsbmen.com Westley Dimagiba

It came with the belt Matt.

      Thanks for reading!

  • Patrick

Hey TSB, we can only see Dan’s slide #3 in this post as of 0900 EST. He references “like all three of us are doing in this post” and so I assume there are other pages that are missing. Wanted to let you know..

    • http://tsbmen.com Townsend

Thanks for the heads up, should be working now. Thanks for reading!

  • Jon

Err… The let’s get faded post is messed up. Only last outfit shows, and no option to cycle backwards. And Dan, I am not digging that striped blue shirt under that alpaca jacket . add in your very dark brown loafers and it looks a bit dandy clowny.

    • http://tsbmen.com Townsend

Should be alright now, thanks for reading!

  • http://profblack.blogspot.kr/ Professor Black

I think I fell in love with you again Dan.

  • josh

Is this post meant to have three looks?

    Only one is showing up.

  • http://greenspree.ca Andy Collier

There appears to be only one look featured in this post…

  • Bradley J.

    I’m only seeing one page

  • Calvin

The first 2 posts aren’t showing. Just Dan and his purple pants lol
