Grown-Up Sneakerhead feat. Elkin Cardona

Elkin Cardona was the winner of the TSB February Giveaway where he went toe-to-toe with Jace Lumley, edging out the win thanks in part to some support from his sneaker-enthusiast family over on Niketalk.

“I was raised in The Bronx, NY through the 80′s and 90′s. It was practically the birthplace of hip-hop culture which, as far as I know, goes hand-in-hand with the love many share for sneakers.

It wasn’t so much about collecting or making a quick profit… I didn’t buy a pair of Jordans to stash away, I bought them because I wanted to be the freshest kid on the first day of school.

Nowadays I’m a 31 year old wedding photographer and no longer dress like I did back in the 90′s. My wardrobe has matured over the years but my love for kicks has remained – and I still wear them 90% of the time. I believe that in order to be dapper you don’t have to throw away (or sell) your kicks to stock-up on shoes, you just have to update the way you wear them.”

As a recovering sneakerhead myself, I wanted to share more of Elkin’s style perspective. So we linked up in NYC for a photoshoot and my guidelines were simple: show me your three favorite pairs of rare sneakers and how you incorporate them into your everyday wardrobe.

“Im a sucker for light colors…maybe i should be living in Miami. During Fashion Week I came across some people that asked me “White after Labor Day?”. I thought it was a joke, lol. I had no clue this was a taboo and honestly I don’t care…there’s something about mixing white with browns that I love.

I also wanted to share this amazing new camera strap. Being a wedding photographer, the worst thing is being nicely dressed and lugging around those awful canon straps, completely ruining your look. It took me a while but I finally came across a very functional and stylish holster-style camera strap. It’s called the Money Maker double camera strap; the leather and hardware are top-notch quality and it can hold up to six cameras! This thing has earned me many compliments at weddings…if you’re a photographer and like to make an impression, YOU ARE WELCOME :)”

“Sneakers and fashion have changed my life to be honest, by giving me an outlet to express myself…

Over the past years I’ve become a regular contributor to quite possibly the best forum on the net, Niketalk.com - a place where guys can go and find info about sneaker releases, upcoming events, etc.

For us regulars it has also become somewhat of an online family (complete with its sibling rivalries) but when it’s time to come together this forum has achieved many great things from donations to build schools in Africa to the simplest if things, like helping me win the February contest here on TSB.

All this because of a passion for kicks.”

Came a long way from NT Fam. All 3 looks are nice. Progressing very nicely

Started from NT now he’s here.

  • Johann

    Third look is really cool.

“If you’re an avid sneaker fan than these need no introduction, the Nike Air Yeezy 2.”

Should be “then” and not “than”. I’m no English major but even I know these things.

      Nice catch player.

    I dig all 3. Kudos

Seriously, for those of you criticizing this post, please keep in mind that this isn’t street style or even TSB style. Elkin was a winner of the Giveaway. How cool is that? It’s strictly Elkin’s style, no one else!

      Word.

  • Tyler Jones

Gotta know where to get some Nike Flyknits like look #3 has.

  • June

I’m sorry, but this is too bad for me not to comment. The epitome of “try hard” fashion.

    • July

      wheres your feature at?

One doesn’t need to be an NFL quarterback to call out Mark Sanchez for throwing dirtballs.

….October, November…Versace Versace Versace…was that too petty of me? lol

Look #3 is surprisingly good, but look #1 is a bit off especially with the tacky LV shoes.

  • Vikflo

    dope.

    Super fly!

This site is great, but I remember in the earlier Style Blogger days there was a greater variety of fashion forward and conservative content.

This blog can feel heavy on what classic menswear fans would consider affections. Although my opinion is just that, a lot of classic menswear fans have trouble finding inspiration in blended streetwear looks.

I think all recent TSB content is great to have, but you should try to make it more relevant to a classic audience as well with some variety. American Traditional, Neopolitan Casual – mixing it up a little beyond the streetwear and MAB suit’s I think may motivate some of your readers who consider themselves ‘moved on’ to come on back.

Congrats on how far you’ve come, cool site.

    • Ben

Yeah, I’ve got to say I agree with the sentiment there. While I like the blend of classic and street styles, I think things can veer a bit into the terrain of being gimmicky, with the looks in some posts likely to date particularly quickly.

    • HM

Honestly, there’s a ton of sites focusing on classic menswear so if that’s your thing there’s no shortage. I think that the range of inspirations and styles Dan explores is what sets tsbmen apart, and makes it one of the only blogs that can still change the way I approach style.

  • Big Jon

I personally am not a sneaker person, but I thought the third look was pretty cool. Add a kangol, and then it works for me.

  • http://ntscollective.tumblr.com Adrian

    E with the stellar feature.

  • cam

the clothes look great but the shoes take away…the flyknits work the best I suppose of all 3

  • LouCaves

Elkin, “kicks” are not my thing. I wear ‘em for their functionality. My closet has running, cycling, hoops and cross trainers.

But I like the ways you put the colors together and the comfortable looking fit of the fabrics. I said one word for Look #3, “whoa, nice.” (“whoa” ain’t a word, lol)

My girl, a photog, likes the camera harness too. Thanks!

    And thanks, TSB.

    • LouCaves

      ps: viva la barba!
