Dressing for NY Fashion Week

New York Fashion Week can be an intimidating, and sometimes hilarious, style scene.

Although the days of hardcore peacocking have, well, peaked, I would still consider it the best time to pull-off unexpected or experimental pieces.

I was traveling from LA to NYC, then on to Toronto for some consulting work, so I tried to keep it simple but pack a couple statement pieces.

Here’s three outfits that I wore during our NYFW, and a brief recap of our trip.

1. Meetings and Pre-Game

17

Our first day in town consisted of several meetings with advertisers and web developers, followed by the #FallClassicNYC: a streetball game between menswear bloggers and influencers.

I’m typically a very light traveler (one carry-on duffle only) so I try to pack basic items that I can wear several times throughout my trip (like neutral pocket tees, black jeans, and penny loafers).

For Fashion Week I threw in a couple pieces that I’ve been itching to wear but haven’t found the right occasion. For example; this vintage silk print jacket from the 80′s.

19

This thing is straight from somebody’s grandma’s closet (it even had velcro-removable shoulder pads), but I was immediately drawn to the print when I saw it hanging in an NYC vintage shop.

I’ve also been obsessed with silk lately. I think it’s the most underrated fabric in menswear. On the low, I may be designing a small collection of exclusive silk pieces for men through a connect in Thailand…

Black penny loafers are a go-to for traveling.

They’re comfortable, easy to slip on and off, and they can be worn with anything from casual or formal.

I wanted to know where I can get those nudies. I can’t find them anywhere anymore sadly. My current pair of waxed denim are fading and I wanted a fresh pair for a cleaner look sometimes.

  • Ye

I feel Dan dresses like Kanye would if Ye actually finished college and had a normal job lol..

Ye prolly wouldnt own as many suits tho lol..thats for sure

    • http://tsbmen.com Dan Trepanier

Haha Ye ain’t tailored like me!! …define “normal job” ?

      • Ye

Normal job, i guess would be the 9-5, something mundane lol. I said “normal job” because a lot of your fits are really office appropriate and versatile at the same time..and I try to emulate some of them at my “normal job” lol.(and i’ve received compliments)

In my opinion, you don’t have a “normal” job either. And I mean that in a good way. I say that because, you are becoming a style icon for menswear, that is unique and very few people can do it.

As Ye says “If you think you can do it better than me..then you do it”

You’re blowing up man. Congrats on the success.

  • Ye

    Dan on that Kon-yay ish

  • http://thekacar.com Mustafa Kacar

All of these looks are super conservative compared to some of the ridiculousness I saw during NYFW. Feeling all 3 outfits though.

  • Thomas

That burgundy suit rocked… I want.

  • Ali

That silk jacket in look 1 is KILLER. Absolutely loving it – hopefully LA will bring out a little more of your street style days, too

    • http://tsbmen.com Dan Trepanier

I think it might… I’m still figuring out my LA style, but we have some great content coming up comparing East coast/West coast…

      Cheers Ali

  • Ian in Dallas

Need to see more pictures of Alex rockin’ that suit! What is that, midnight blue? Great looks all!

  • http://undefined Steven

This is one of my fave posts in a while.. You guys look fantastic, and check out Alex! KILLING IT.

Dan, I like the length on the beard, looks like a 2-clip or a 3.. keep it that way!

I am hoping eventually you do a post on the top places you have found to shop around here in LA, that would be amazing.

Cant wait to hear more about the silk stuff as well

    • Jack

I was going to say the same thing, regarding the beard.

    • http://tsbmen.com Dan Trepanier

Thank Steven. We have some great LA stuff coming up…still figuring out the shopping scene though…any suggestions? Would love to find some good menswear consignment and vintage shops…

Very nice post, but what I want to know is what happened to the lowrider style placa “The Style Blogger” you had at the top of the page. The top of your page looked like the back window of a ’64 Impala. Maybe it was too much LA all at once, but I had liked that. I mean, what’s up there now, Times New Roman?! Come on man, you got more font game than that.

    • http://tsbmen.com Dan Trepanier

Over the next week or two we’ll be making some cosmetic changes to the website. Please excuse us if things are caught in an in-between phase at times.

Wait – you see the header title in Times New Roman?? What browser are you using? And can you email me a screenshot to dan@tsbmen.com

TO ALL READERS: IF YOU EVER SEE ANYTHING FUNKY-LOOKING WITH THE LAYOUT OF THE SITE, PLEASE EMAIL ME A SCREENSHOT WITH THE NAME AND VERSION # OF YOUR WEB BROWSER. THX!!!

      • Daniel Moretz

It was Lobster font on my Mac in Firefox. I saw a few others as well. Google fonts gets weird sometimes. If you have the font saved directly to your site it typically stays very consistent.

        Great post!

        -Daniel

        • Joe

I see the Lobster font also now, in the top left (Sorry Dan, I refreshed my page before I could snap a screen pic). But before, I saw what looked like Times New Roman centered above the TSB diamond. I was partial to the placa style (http://cdn.speedhunters.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/bueno29.jpg) you had before, I thought it was the LA influence. Either way, I look forward to what’s coming up and I’ll let you know if weird things are afoot.

      “people know me”

    • Brick

Where’d you get those clothes….from the toilet store??

      • http://www.tsbmen.com Westley Dimagiba

a sink is dirtier than the toilet actually, clever compliment brick ;]

  • Stevesy

That burgundy peak lapel is absolute nails. Perfect for pole dancer contemplation. Also, Alex and menswear dog in matching navy suits and black bow ties? Superb.

    • http://tsbmen.com Dan Trepanier

Absolute nails, eh? Where you from?

  • John Foster, III

Looking good as always. You all rock the sockless look! But, you all rock all the looks you present in the blog. Keep on rocking the looks; I enjoy your blog. I miss the What I Wore Today feature. Thanks.

    • http://tsbmen.com Dan Trepanier

Thanks John. It was a warm week in NY. WIWT will be back soon…

  • http://undefined Jeanscuffed

Damn, that jacket in Look 1, flawless. The other looks on point as well.

P.s. Any upcoming stories on the dancer?? (emoji eyes)

    • http://tsbmen.com Dan Trepanier

Hah — there are plenty of other sites for that type of content, player.

  • John B

Ok, I’m actually jealous of almost every piece on this post. Especially the dinner jacket. You really pulled off the silk jacket, which is a feat in it’s own right!

  • http://undefined TO

Love the silk jacket and Thailand tidbit… and I didn’t realize there were so many of those awesome details on that dinner jacket! I’ll leave the club alone, but the Burgundy dresses up so so well!! Mensweardog haha

  • BF

    ok #3

The dog in the tux and dan ogling the beyond-fit pole trollop = priceless

    • http://tsbmen.com Dan Trepanier

      haha she is pretty diesel.

  • cam

looks like you guys had a great fashion week…is it me or does that dinner jacket look quit similar to the band of outsiders jacket that kanye wore awhile back? he is one of your style icons though right?

    • http://tsbmen.com Dan Trepanier

Thx Cam. Yeezus is always an inspiration.
