Street Style: Sundance Film Festival 2014

January 20th, 2014

We’re in Park City Utah this weekend for Sundance Film Festival, attending movie premieres, networking at events & parties, and taking a little time off to hit the slopes.

Set in a beautiful ski town in the mountains, Sundance is an energetic melting pot of creative people from every side of the movie industry; actors, directors, producers, musicians, agents, publicists, film buffs, etc. There is a genuine excitement in the air as crew’s get set to reveal, discuss, and celebrate their new film projects with fans and fellow industry insiders.

The style along Main Street this weekend was a diverse array of “sharp casual” looks tough enough to beat the snowy winter temps. Here’s some of our favorite stylish gents from the Festival, along with some commentary about why we stopped to photograph them.

1. Tough Toggle Coat

08

This is the perfect cross between rugged and sharp. Nicely fitted topcoat with hardcore metal fasteners, thick wooly mock-neck sweater, perfectly broken-in denim, and beefy Red Wings. Love the touches of orange throughout. Also, great grooming!

2. Herringbone Tweed Peacoat

03

This tweed peacoat was really something in person – all fuzzy and textured. Nice play with the forest green crewneck and Fall-colored flannel shirt, too.

3. Fur Scarf & Crocodile Blazer!!?

23

Probably my favorite look of the weekend. I couldn’t pull it off, but he owns it with such a confidence and a lets-have-fun demeanor. Also, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a full-on crocodile blazer!!! (especially with a dip-died fur scarf and blue fedora). So much energy and personality in this look – this guy is surely the life of the party.

4. Beefy Tweed Overcoat

53

This herringbone tweed overcoat was one of my favorite pieces we saw all weekend. It’s so heavy that my man had only needed a t-shirt underneath. Also, nice touch with those khaki-almost-mustard chinos and perfect shades for your face.

5. Sleek Double-Breasted Chesterfield

07

A timeless look with some menswear classic, and what a beautiful coat. Sometimes the fabric quality of a garment jumps out at you (this chesterfield is not from H&M). Nice touch with the sleek black accessories too.

6. LA Cool, Winter Edition

09

This look reminds me of LA style, transplanted to the cold. Love the black & brown color palette and the “laid-back cool” vibe of the drapy circle scarf and subtly-dropcrotch pants. Nice finish with the hat and sharply groomed beard.

7. All About Those Menswear Staples

25

Tweed blazer, ribbed cardigan with leather buttons, chambray shirt, collegiate scarf, raw denim, rugged boots. This guy is all about the preppy menswear staples, and he’s nailing them.

8. Throwback Funk

60

This is how you wear a vintage shearling-lined trench coat: you own it in earthy colors. Also, it’s crazy how much the shape and color of sunglasses can affect an overall look. Stay fresh my man.

9. Sunny & Shady

40

You move indoors/outdoors a lot at these festivals, making layers and convertible shades a wise choice. I’m feeling the orange bubble coat and green scarf over the playful patterned shirt, too.

10. Browns & Greys & Furs

44

There was a ton of fur on display this weekend, from huge floor-length coats, to big bushy scarves, to sleek hats like this one. More on fur coming soon.

11. Trim Topcoat Over Blues

54

You know we love a sleek tailored look in dark monochromatic colors. Enough Said.

12. Warm & Fuzzy

57

Alex noticed this guy for his awesome canvas workwear jacket, bushy beard & tortoise frames combo. The sherpa-lined fold-over bean boots were a nice bonus.

13. East Coast Things

15

This clean-cut gentleman looked like he was straight from a Ralph Lauren ad with his cropped toggle coat and nautical striped shawl pull-over. Extra points for the buttoned-up chambray shirt, the clean roll on the heavy denim and the oxblood leather boots.

14. Long Hair Don’t Care

62

These dudes define what it means to be cool creatives on the West Coast. I just want to hang out with them.

15. Moleskin Peacoat

59

Remember we were telling you about moleskin peacoats and light washed denim. This guy got the memo and did it right – yellow gloves in the pocket and all.

16. Artfully Disheveled

68

Grammy and Golden Globe winning singer/songwriter/composer Alex Ebert has awesome personal style. Not always conventional, but always inspiring in a Bohemian Jesus kind of way.

    • scott

haha no, but number 6 appears to be the rapper Common?

  • Ft_tony

look number 3 looks like he’s been shopping the Dennis Rodman Collection…

    • Gusto

and put it together tastefully. I only wish I could pull the same outfit off.

    • AdamE

I was going to say, cool how he owns it, but it does look straight outta Rodman’s closet… My Favorites are #1,6 , 7, 11 & 13, all of which I could see myself pulling off. There are lots of ideas to pull from the others, but I am neither an artists nor west coast creative, so I don’t think i could (or would) pull the whole looks off….
Pleasantly surprised at the practicality of people actually wearing proper boots (save for the one sockless look…), might be because the plethora of great men’s boots available this year (and at least a few sporting the classic Red Wings too).
