There is something about a navy blazer + khaki trousers.
It’s the classic all-American Prep school uniform. Whether you like it or not, there is a good chance you wore it (or had to wear it) at one point or another.
As you’ve heard me say before, good style is all about keeping things slightly unexpected. The unique touches, however, can be laid in very subtlety.
Here, by simply playing with fabrics and dimensions, I show how a “standard” blue blazer + khakis + brown loafers look can be transformed into something fresh.
1. Seersucker DB + Linen Trousers
Following our post “casually double breasted”, this look shows that db suit jackets can also be worn as seperates.
Bonus Tip: Seersucker and linen are a match made in (the really hot part of) heaven.
Bonus Tip II: Tortoise acetate [shades] and tiger’s eye stone [bracelet] have a very similar tone, and work well together.
Bonus Tip III: A white cotton pocket square with colored tipping is a gentle step up from the simple solid square fold.

I love a navy jacket and khaki pants combo. It’s never wrong in my book. I’m still looking to purchase my first db jacket, been looking but nothing catches my eye yet. Another great work man.

not my style at all – however I love some of the pieces individually, such as the last coat.
My god you’re handsome.
I am amazed to see such an amazing post. Keep up the good work.
When/where can we buy that DB cord blazer?!
which Bass loafers are those in the last outfit?
Awesome double strap shoes on the first picture. Where can I get a pair?
I love your style dan!! Keep on inspiring!
I hope you and your readers can take a moment and check out my fashion blog!

You should have included that extra picture from the Lookbook. That would have definitely been the best look. But great work nonetheless!
I dig most of these looks. I’m way too hip-hop for the rolled up pants…but the ideas I dig.
The Double Breasted Blazer works for me on so many levels. Especially the lapels. The combo of the fabric, color, and lapels work so perfect with each other & gives the coat the look of luxury and style. WICKED!
It’s nice how you focus on the little details and ‘steps’ in evolving in your own or the avg gentleman’s style for that matter…little tips like Bonus Tip III: A white cotton pocket square with colored tipping is a gentle step up from the simple solid square fold. – these are really valuable (and underestimated)little insights into progressing in ones style – Big fan of the subtleties and the practical tips..keep up the great work!

Thanks!
Dan, I don’t see how u always nail it so perfectly. I love seeing your variations on classic styles. I would never have tried a DB blazer but now I think I have to give it a shot! Thanks for expanding my horizons haha
No problem Keaton, that’s what I’m trying to do. Thanks for the compliments.
Cheers,
Dan
The one minor quibble is your advice that one can wear a DB suit jacket as a separate. That’s highly risky, as suit jackets are cut differently and only those who really know what they’re doing are able to work out the way a suit is cut and whether it works as a blazer. As far as I understand, your blog is for normal guys, not ones with the aesthetic sophistication that this exercise would require.
Advice to wear suit jackets as separates should come with a major health warning (witness all of those guys on casual Friday who think they can wear a suit jacket, work shirt, black belt, black shoes and jeans).
A DB blazer of course is another thing entirely, and I suspect that that is what you really meant (and what you are in fact wearing!).
Hey Toby, thanks for sharing.
Not sure what you mean by “normal guys”. I’m curious also; for those who “really know what they’re doing”, how are they’re blazers cut different than they’re suit jackets?
In my opinion, it has nothing to do with the cutting (i.e. pattern making), and more to do with the piece’s styling (fabric, texture, pattern, pocket style, lapel style, vent style, shoulder construction, etc). With that said, they’re certainly are suit jacket that can double as blazers, as I’ve shown numerous times.
Cheers and thanks for reading,

ay yi yi this look is so overplayed. what kaka. i am so tired of seeing this look with blue blazer, high water khakis, no socks, and aviators. this is not the epitomy of good style. its just one look and its getting old. all the style blogs are all over it. its time for some style bloggers to move on. try some new looks. do whats not allowed, go against the grain, find some new inspiration
I think you may have missed the point here, but I can understand your frustrations with the “limits” so many men put on the way they dress.
May I recommend:

Mr Martin,
How dare you criticize Mr Trepanier? How dare you? A style icon, a stylist, a designer, a style blogger. Shame on you Martin.
Well, it’s considered a staple of the male wardrobe. It’s simple but nice. Yes, it isn’t the best, but it does look good.
I’m super excited for that navy blazer. Do you have an estimate on price, so that we can start saving? :)
Been waiting for this exact post. Love look #2, I’m officially in the market for some floral printage. Thanks Dan!
dapper dan,
the navy hopsack is perfect. i can’t tell from the pics but is it a 2-button or a 3 2 roll?
Hey Cam. It’s a 3-2 roll (as of now – this may change).
More on the collection coming soon.
Cheers,
Dan
Perfect looks, the best one is the last look ;)

Thanks Filipe!
Dressed my teh intanets: DB and dubs, and the official SF PS. Nevertheless, everything looks very nice. Except the bracelet, which is pretty gnarly. B+
Didn’t get any of the first part of this, but thanks for reading!

:) THX!
Dan — the makeover is great, and being a traditionalist – I would stop just before the high-water khakis – but that’s just me. I also understand fashion takes things in different directions. I could never (ever) pull it off.
Thanks Paul. Well, to each his own. But never say never!

The corduroy jacket is a monster. Love the japanese inspired shirt in the second look. Glad to see more designers (even places like The GAP) are going with floral print.
