Borrowing from Her Closet, ft. Karyn Bailey

Published on July 17th, 2011

There is no doubt that fashion is a women’s game. In my brief stint as a menswear buyer for a major luxury retailer, I found it disheartening to see that 85% of total sales were in womenswear (and 65% of the menswear purcahsed was sold to women!).

Not only does the opposite sex love to shop, they also have endless outlets and options. All too often while shopping I find myself saying “damn, that is hot! If only they made it for men!”.

Well, if you can’t beat’ em, join em. If you have a fashion-conscious girlfriend, there are likely certain items in her wardrobe that you can incorporate into your look.

Here, with the help of the super stylish and angel-esk Karyn Bailey, we each put our own spin on some pieces from her closet.

1. How She Wore It: Feather Earring & Silk Scarf

How I Wore It: Lapel Feather & Pocket Square

Accesorries are probably the easiest womenswear items to pull-off. Silk scarves are instant pocket squares (or ascots), and little quirqy touches like a feather through the lapel hole can be playful and remain masculine at the same time.

Bonus Tip: Don’t be afraid to peek in the women’s section, especially for accessories like scarves, belts, etc.

Bonus Tip II: Pairing similar hues together makes for a refined look. This outfit is full of red-ish browns and brown-ish reds.

Lapel feather is Karyn’s earring. Pocket square is Karyn’s scarf. Linen suit and gingham shirt by Michael Andrews Bespoke (custom made, my own design). Shoes by Scarpe di Bianco. Shades by Persol. Watch by Montblanc. Alligator belt by Ralph Lauren Purpel Label.
