There is no doubt that fashion is a women’s game. In my brief stint as a menswear buyer for a major luxury retailer, I found it disheartening to see that 85% of total sales were in womenswear (and 65% of the menswear purcahsed was sold to women!).
Not only does the opposite sex love to shop, they also have endless outlets and options. All too often while shopping I find myself saying “damn, that is hot! If only they made it for men!”.
Well, if you can’t beat’ em, join em. If you have a fashion-conscious girlfriend, there are likely certain items in her wardrobe that you can incorporate into your look.
Here, with the help of the super stylish and angel-esk Karyn Bailey, we each put our own spin on some pieces from her closet.
1. How She Wore It: Feather Earring & Silk Scarf

How I Wore It: Lapel Feather & Pocket Square
Accesorries are probably the easiest womenswear items to pull-off. Silk scarves are instant pocket squares (or ascots), and little quirqy touches like a feather through the lapel hole can be playful and remain masculine at the same time.
Bonus Tip: Don’t be afraid to peek in the women’s section, especially for accessories like scarves, belts, etc.
Bonus Tip II: Pairing similar hues together makes for a refined look. This outfit is full of red-ish browns and brown-ish reds.
Lapel feather is Karyn’s earring. Pocket square is Karyn’s scarf. Linen suit and gingham shirt by Michael Andrews Bespoke (custom made, my own design). Shoes by Scarpe di Bianco. Shades by Persol. Watch by Montblanc. Alligator belt by Ralph Lauren Purpel Label.

lately i have found myself doing just this…raiding the womens section for an extra pop of color or pattern…I bet if you hadn’t mentioned that these were ‘women’s’ items first, readers would have swooned. I’m a pretty masculine looking dude but who doesn’t love a bit of flair? I love it all, keep it up!
Well, you’ve got to share :)

THIS IS FUCKING INSANITY.
“Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” – Albert Einstein
In a way, it’s kind of the opposite of insanity.
Thanks for reading.
This is one of my favorite fashion articles of all time. I love unconventional styling methods and this definitely out of the ordinary, but in the best way possible.
The print blouse with levis is ridiculously awesome. A classic “why not” moment! :)
Karyn’s outfits are real dope. Definitely catch my eye..as my girlfriend dresses similar..I don’t mind her raiding my closet for boyfriend fit..but um..girlfriend fit?! I enjoy the first look in which you used her feather earring as a lapel pin..and her scarf as a pocket square..her dress worn as your shirt? I know Kanye did that with the Celine SS2011 piece..but that was..practical cause it was more like a traditional Indian kurta/tunic..
Major props for taking risks w/fashion..but definitely not something I could see myself doing.
PS I’m all for using each others accessories though..so long as they’re not too..girly.
SB,
I shall now refer to you as “Mr. Whitefolks”. Nuff said pimpin’
Love this post, this is awesome
Hey Dan now you’re scarring me boss!
What you’re going to wear next post her skirt!
I’m usually a huge fan of your looks, even the more experimental ones, and I was with you here until your turned a dress into a shirt/blouse. It’s a forced look in my opinion, partially evidenced by the fact that you had to tuck in the front but not the back to mitigate how ill-fitting the dress is as a men’s shirt. Ended up looking more like a costume than a workable outfit. Good idea for a post, but took it a bit too far with the last one. Props on everything else!
love everything in the last look except the sandles. but thats my personal disdain for sandals. i think thats my first time saying i hate anything on this site.
I’m with you on the sandals thing – also a preference.
so smart! i was a little skeptical when i read the name of this post but these guys turned out looking dapper. well done.
my boyfriend’s been known to steal my oversized flannels or a belt, we’ll see if he starts borrowing other items. :)

It was really inspiring. Thanks Dan for blogging, you can pull off everything. :)
At first, I was a bit alarmed when I read the title of this post. However I was pleasantly surprised. The 1st was defiantly my favorite, everything about the outfit was great.
There’s actually a tranny clothing store in Queens called Susan “Be” Anthony.
I love how they wore the silk scarves. Just proving they’re versatile for men and women!
“although it’s probably worth it at the end of the day, literally.”
Ha, I hear you Dan. The girl who loves dressing me up in the morning is always the first to dress me down at night.
Good post. Bold moves! Keep making ‘em!
dan, i really like the idea and inspiration behind this post and you are right, karen is definitely angelic

Cool post! I can’t say that I’ve never wore a piece of clothing that belongs to my girlfriend. And I’m not talking about a dress for halloween!
When the boyfriend jeans came into fashion for the girls we decided to switch a couple of pieces and one was this denim shirt you can see on a post in my blog.
I think it looks pretty good on me also! lol…
So.. I’m all for exchanging clothing and accessories..

Is there any means to have the full-sized version? for personnal use?
Thx Morgan. Sure, just click on it.
Cheers,
Dan
Thx for your answer Dan but I was asking for a larger resolution than 1024×682.
I am assuming “you’re” camera shot in highest resolution than that ;)
Anyway, it’s still pretty cool to have it in such a size.
Cheers from France,
My bad, didn’t notice you change the picture’s link :)
Merci beaucoup!
Wow those girls know how to dress, by the way Dan your first outfit is really nice for summer, great job.
*For a moment I thought you where gonna show as how to wear skirts, haha.
This post is extremely clutch!
This would be fun to experiment with if I wasn’t 6 inches taller and 70lbs heavier than my girlfriend… I can barely get my arm through the neck of most her stuff haha
