Sock it to ‘Em featuring DJ McDonald

Published on November 3rd, 2011

It’s no secret that an accessory can complete a look. In some cases, however, it can also make a look.

Here, the very stylish and suave DJ McDonald – a student at Hunter College studying adolescent education and history – shows us how he adds a punch to his look using his playful sock collection.

You may recognize DJ. We first met him at the launch party for MAB by Dan Trepanier, then shot him for the reader feature the following day and he also helped us with some modeling for the TSB SHOP.

1. Where black meets brown

Firstly, if you’re going to try a statement sock, or any statement accessory, make sure you have the basics down. This includes proper fit, classic pieces, smart color coordination, etc.

I don’t wear black suits often, but that doesn’t mean they can’t look damn sharp.

Bonus Tip: Using some color in the shirt and accessories can help break up the starkness and formality of a black suit.

Bonus Tip II: Brown suit with black shoes – no. Black suit with brown shoes – hell yeah.

Bonus Tip III: Something about a black suit + black tie will always look retro cool. I love how DJ makes it business-worthy with a banker style shirt. Effectively styling to get more versatility out of his wardrobe.

Bonus Tip IV: A colorful or patterned sock brings attention to the footwear and complements a textured shoe very well.
